RTX 50 Series PSU guide: cable, wattage and case checks before you buy

An RTX 50 Series PSU decision starts with the exact graphics card, not a rule such as “buy 750 W.” NVIDIA publishes different required system-power and connector guidance for different cards. Its current comparison table lists 1,000 W and a 600 W-or-greater PCIe Gen 5 cable option for the GeForce RTX 5090, 850 W and a 450 W-or-greater option for the RTX 5080, and 750 W and a 300 W-or-greater option for the RTX 5070 Ti. NVIDIA bases these minimums on a PC with a Ryzen 9 9950X and notes that requirements change with the system configuration. Those figures are a starting point for the full PC. Board-partner card dimensions, connectors and recommendations can vary. This guide shows how to verify the exact combination before placing an order in India.
Start with the exact card, not the GPU family
Write down the complete card model, including its board partner and cooler version. Then open that card maker’s official product page and record:
- required system power;
- the required GPU power connector or supplied adapter;
- card length, height and slot width; and
- any installation or cable-clearance instruction.
NVIDIA’s comparison table is useful as a baseline because it separates power and connector requirements by model, but it also marks several card dimensions as varying by manufacturer. NVIDIA specifications A case that fits one RTX 5080 is not automatically confirmed for every RTX 5080 partner card.
Know what the 16-pin cable label means
The connector often appears in listings as “PCIe Gen 5,” “12V-2x6” or “12VHPWR.” Do not infer the cable’s capability from its appearance or from the PSU wattage alone. Intel’s public design guide describes the PCIe CEM 5.1 12V-2x6 auxiliary-power connector as supporting up to 600 W. For a given PSU, confirm all of these on the manufacturer’s page or manual:
- the PSU’s exact model and revision;
- whether a native 16-pin cable is included;
- the connector and cable rating stated by that manufacturer; and
- the installation guidance for fully seating and routing the cable.
Use the cable that came with the PSU or one that its manufacturer explicitly approves for that PSU model. Do not treat a modular cable from another PSU as interchangeable merely because the connector end looks familiar: PSU-side pinouts can vary across brands and even across series. Worked documentation example: RTX 5080, native cable and case length
This is a record of documented specifications, not a build recommendation, a declaration that the finished PC is compatible, or a statement about India price or stock. MSI specifies the GeForce RTX 5080 16G GAMING TRIO OC at 338 × 140 × 50 mm, 360 W, with one 16-pin connector, and calls for an 850 W PSU. MSI card specification The exact MSI MAG A850GL PCIE5 II page lists 850 W total power, one PCIe 16-pin-to-16-pin cable, and says its native 16-pin connector can supply up to 600 W to PCIe 5.1 graphics cards. For card length alone, NZXT’s current H5 Flow (2024) support guidance gives a 410 mm GPU maximum with no front-mounted radiator; it says a standard front radiator-and-fan configuration can reduce room by up to 60 mm. That puts this 338 mm card within the published no-front-radiator length envelope, with 72 mm nominally remaining. This still is not a pass for cable routing or a front-radiator layout. The cited card, PSU and case material do not provide a matching side-panel clearance or a cable-bend measurement for this combination. Before checkout, confirm the exact installed front hardware and obtain the cable-routing/side-panel clearance from the relevant manufacturer; seat the supplied native cable fully and do not force the panel shut.
Turn NVIDIA’s number into a complete system check
NVIDIA’s required system-power number is a starting requirement for the whole PC. It is not the GPU’s measured consumption and it does not remove the need to check the CPU, drives, pumps, fans and expansion cards. Use this sequence:
- Start with the exact GPU maker’s recommended system power.
- Check the CPU maker’s documentation and the components you will actually install.
- Confirm that the PSU has the required connectors without adapters you have not documented.
- If you are using NVIDIA’s supplied adapter, follow NVIDIA and the card maker’s instructions; do not assume every case has enough routing room.
- If the evidence leaves the combination close to a limit, do not declare it safe from a generic online calculator. Ask the PSU or GPU manufacturer with the exact parts list.
This avoids two common errors: choosing by an old wattage rule, and paying for extra wattage while overlooking the required connector.
Check case fit and cable routing before checkout
GPU fit has three dimensions: card length, card height/width, and slot thickness. Add the case maker’s maximum GPU clearance, the position of front fans or radiators, and room for the power cable after it is fully seated. The graphics-card page and the case manual are the authorities here; a retailer title usually is not.
Treat the side panel as part of the compatibility check. If you cannot find a documented clearance figure or cable-routing instruction, keep the build unresolved. Do not force a sharply bent 16-pin cable just because the card slides into the main chamber.
What to compare in PcPaisa
After the specification work is complete, compare live GPU listings and PSU listings. Check the full product title, model code and retailer terms against your notes. A lower price for a different PSU revision, a card with another cooler, or a bundle missing the documented cable is not the same purchase.
