Should I upgrade CPU or GPU first? (India, 2026)

Decision flowchart for upgrading either the CPU or GPU on a 3-5 year old build.

The 5-second rule

If your CPU is older than your GPU, upgrade CPU. Otherwise GPU.

That’s 80% accurate. The remaining 20% needs the flowchart below.

2. What resolution do you play at?

  • 1080p: CPU matters. Even a 4090 gets bottlenecked by an old CPU at 1080p.
  • 1440p: GPU matters more. A Ryzen 5 3600 + RTX 4070 is balanced.
  • 4K: Almost pure GPU bound. Old CPU is fine.

3. Run this test

Open Task Manager / btop while gaming. If CPU is at 90-100% and GPU is at 60-80%, you’re CPU-bound — upgrade CPU. If GPU is at 99% and CPU is at 40-60%, you’re GPU-bound — upgrade GPU.

The Indian pricing wrinkle

CPU upgrades in India often need motherboard + RAM (DDR4 → DDR5, or AM4 → AM5). That’s ₹25-40k for the platform alone. So:

  • CPU upgrade in same socket (e.g., Ryzen 5 3600 → Ryzen 5 5600 on AM4): ₹8-10k
  • CPU + platform upgrade (AM4 → AM5): ₹35-45k
  • GPU upgrade (RX 6600 → RTX 4070 Super): ₹30-40k

So if you’d need a platform jump, GPU is usually the better value.

Common upgrade paths in 2026

Ryzen 5 3600 + RX 6600 → ?

  • Best: Ryzen 5 5600 (drop-in, ₹8k) — keeps you on AM4 1-2 more years
  • Then save up for RX 9060 XT or RTX 5060 next year

Ryzen 5 5600 + RTX 3060 → ?

  • Best: GPU upgrade to RTX 4070 Super (₹48k) — you’re already CPU-fine
  • Skip the AM4 → AM5 jump until Zen 6

Intel i5-10400F + GTX 1660 Super → ?

  • Tough — DDR4 platform is dying, RTX 4060 is bottlenecked here
  • Best: full rebuild on AM5 (Ryzen 5 7600 + B650M + 32GB DDR5 + RTX 4060)

What to never do

  • Upgrade GPU without checking PSU: 750W is the floor for any modern x70-class GPU.
  • Mix DDR4 sticks of different speeds: They’ll run at the lowest. And likely instability.
  • Buy used GPUs from crypto miners: Fans worn, thermal pads dry, undisclosed BIOS mods.
